Dr. Emad Hassan Redha Al Khersan is a distinguished academic and geologist with extensive experience in both the oil industry and higher education in Iraq. He earned his PhD in Geology (specializing in Geophysics) from the University of Baghdad, Iraq, in 2007. His doctoral research focused on palaeomagnetic studies and their applications in tectonic reconstruction, examining the magnetic properties of rocks to understand geological deformations and plate movements. In 1990,
Dr. Al Khersan joined the Basra Oil Company as a geological assistant, a role he held for four years. This field experience equipped him with practical skills in subsurface analysis and hydrocarbon exploration. In 1995, he transitioned to academia as a research assistant in the Department of Geology, College of Science at the University of Basrah. Over more than two decades of dedicated service there, he advanced through academic ranks, attaining the rank of professor in 2013. In 2015, he was appointed Head of the Geology Department. However, he continued his academic career: in 2017, he moved to the University Basrah for Oil and Gas, a specialized institution in energy sciences. Until June 2023, he served as the university’s Vice-Chancellor for Scientific Affairs, overseeing scientific research, postgraduate studies, and scientific innovation. Throughout his career, he has published 35 research papers. His work focuses on several areas of geophysics, including: Seismic reflection techniques for detecting and characterizing hydrocarbon accumulations (a critical tool in oil and gas exploration), Palaeomagnetic studies, using natural remanent magnetization in rocks to solve tectonic problems, such as reconstructing ancient continental movements and regional tectonic history and Engineering and radiation geophysics. Dr. Al-Khersan retired from the Basrah University for Oil and Gas in 2025, and currently holds the position of Head of the Oil and Gas Engineering Department at Shatt Al Arab University College.
