Historical Background of the Department of Oil and Gas Engineering
College of Engineering / University of Shatt Al-Arab
The Department of Oil and Gas Engineering was established in 2025 as one of the newest academic departments within the College of Engineering at the University of Shatt Al-Arab. Its establishment coincided with the University's academic expansion and reflected its commitment to meeting the growing demand for highly qualified engineers in the oil and gas sector, which represents the backbone of the Iraqi economy, particularly in Basra Governorate, the country's principal center of petroleum production and energy industries.
Since its inception, the Department has been dedicated to providing a modern engineering education based on internationally recognized academic standards. The undergraduate program is designed to integrate fundamental engineering sciences with practical applications in petroleum exploration and production, reservoir engineering, drilling engineering, natural gas engineering, production engineering, and related disciplines. The curriculum also emphasizes the development of students' analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills through the use of advanced engineering software and modern digital technologies employed in the oil and gas industry.
The Department places significant emphasis on creating a distinguished learning and research environment by establishing specialized laboratories equipped with modern educational and experimental facilities. It encourages undergraduate research and graduation projects that address real engineering challenges facing the energy sector while promoting innovation, scientific research, and participation in national and international scientific conferences and professional activities.
Furthermore, the Department seeks to strengthen collaboration with the Ministry of Oil, national and international oil companies, and other industrial partners to provide students with practical training opportunities and professional experience. Such partnerships contribute to bridging the gap between academic education and labor market requirements while supporting sustainable development and the advancement of Iraq's energy sector.
Guided by the vision and mission of the College of Engineering, the Department of Oil and Gas Engineering aspires to become a leading academic and research center in petroleum engineering education. It aims to graduate competent engineers equipped with strong scientific knowledge, practical skills, professional ethics, and innovative thinking, enabling them to contribute effectively to the development of the oil and gas industry and to support sustainable economic growth in Iraq.
